I like very much the shop Nr5 in the Neubaugasse and the Don Gil store in the 1st District.

Kaffee Alt Wien

In the Bäckerstrasse 9 in the 1st district of Vienna is a place that could be described as an institution of the Viennese coffee house culture: the Kaffee Alt Wien.
Here you can spend an afternoon or evening between students, artists, tourists, regulars and one or another bizarre guest, in a smoky and melancholy Viennese atmosphere with dim lighting and walls lined with billboards.
The Kaffee Alt Wien opens daily from 10am to 2pm and offers everything you could possibly expect from a traditional Viennese cuisine and with the sometimes grumpy, sometimes very polite waiters, you will get the typical Viennese coffee house flair.

The show consists of around 200 of the best press photographs of 2009. The exhibited photographs have been awarded prizes in the world's most prestigious photo-journalist competition. The winning photograph is part of a story depicting the nights following the contested presidential elections in Iran, when people shouted their dissent from roofs and balconies, after daytime protests in the streets. The story as a whole was awarded first prize in the category People in the News.
The show, which is conceived of as a travelling exhibition, will visit over 100 locations throughout the world and is seen by around two million visitors. Interview with Martin Meister

Your new album „High Fidelity“ has just been released. What can we expect this time?

You can expect a record of Electronica and Dark Pop.

Your music is strongly inspired by the 80s. What in particular do you like about the 80s sound?

Actually, the sound is not quite 80s, as I work with contemporary producers and the style comes from the UK and Los Angeles at the moment. My vocal timbre is 80s, it actually is rather an extinct timbre and pitch. This is why I am so often counted to the 80s.
Generally, it is extremely rare that there are male singers of electronic pop music. Unfortunately, the powerful heterosexual record label bosses prefer women – and then match them with a fitted sound. I’m no fan of Beyonce and the like. They are great performers and good singers, but they don’t have much to do with real art and real music. It all sounds the same, they no longer write the lyrics to the songs themselves. The singing of these ladies sounds like that of good backing vocalists.

Are there musicians and bands who inspire you? What sound apart from your own do you like to listen to?

At home I actually listen to any kind of music, apart from R’n’B and club/house music. As I have been in the music business for more than a decade, people always send me interesting tracks. I also like to listen to Goldfrapp or great timeless artists. I’m a huge fan of Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, Scott Walker as well as Blondie or David Bowie.

It seems, a personal style does not only play a major role in your music videos? How would you define your personal style?

As dandy goth or goth dandy. I look at the whole thing with a tongue-in-cheek attitude. It also is based on my characteristic face and is inspired by the time of the silent films and their male roles which were extremely exaggerated with that certain chic. The video for „Dangerous Cat“ also plays in the 1940s, the model for the two girls was Ava Gardner. The outfits were provided by Louis Vuitton, the collection reminded oft hat era. For „Follow Me“, I adopted the classic silent film goth dandy with black-edged eyes. The look is an interplay between the designer Dexter Wong (Michael Jackson) and the Belgian Xavier Delcour as well as Tom Rebl for the „Follow Me“ single cover. The video for „Play My Drum“ is based on black circus, a reference to burlesque nightclubbing and revue bars in the 1950s. It is, in a way, the continuation of the „Follow Me“ goth dandy who heroically sings alone on stage and now dives into the „Play My Drum“ nightclub world.

You are openly gay. In your music videos and your performance, you like to play with sexuality and gender roles. Is there a message beind this or do you think Vienna has reached a point where sexuality does no longer matter?

Unfortunately, there are still many people who cannot be open about their sexuality due to religious, professional or family reasons – or just due to the fear of sexuality. Furthermore, I would not like to see gays being categorised. I think it is terrible to stick a label to someone and to say: because you’re gay, you need to behave a certain way – or because you behave a certain way, you must be gay. Gay people have created a ghetto for themselves. Often, gay men exclude other gay men if they do not fit into their scheme of attractivity or simply do not match their stereotype. In a fringe group, it is totally ridiculous to point the finge rat somebody else in the same fringe group. In our modern world, everybody has the right to behave the way they want. I mean: also a heterosexual man can dress in a feminine way if he likes this kind of dressing style. Or you can be a soldier and be gay – I also included this in my video of „Play My Drum“, which shows two androgynous soldiers to my lyrics line 'there is something going on down below'.
Not everyone has to express their sexuality to the outside. You can also be a gay butcher or a gay mechanic who doesn’t like to dance on the table at the gay club. You can be bisexual and live it – as long as you practice safe sex and don’t secretly cheat on your wife at home.
I would like to tell people: f*ck stereotypes, be the way you are. Just because you’re gay, nobody forces you to live a certain predefined lifestyle. After all, we are not in some kind of sect! And if you’re a masculine guy and you feel like wearing make-up and going to the cinema with your girlfriend, then do that. It is what distinguises us from monkeys: we can walk upright and choose how we want to dress and express ourselves individually.

After quite a while in London, you are living in Vienna now. What are the advantages and disadvantages of an artist in Vienna?

The advantage: it is significantly more compact here in Vienna and quality of life is higher. Easier ways of getting around the city on the streets and on the tube. Here, I can reach the studio or the shooting faster than I would in London. Also, transport expenses, rents, etc. are much less here than in London; healthcare and the doctors are better here. I love the inner city as the small pearl it is.
The disadvantage: unfortunately, there is often a village-like thinking and small-town mentality in Vienna. Sometimes, people are in the media or in leading positions who would never have made it in London or Paris. And the only reason for this is the fact that they have the necessary money or contacts. Also, innovation is only accepted slowly in this city – or copied one-to-one. And, as in any small town, often spat on in the beginning. Many things here work according to the motto 'it has alsways been this way and will always stay this way'. I have never counted myself to this society and will continue to do my thing.

Where do you like to spend your free evenings in Vienna?

At a nice restaurant or cosy at home.

What are your next plans after the album „High Fidelity“ and the new video for „Play My Drum“?

The Eurovision Song Contest.

Your message to the world?

Be yourself, be open for new things – and if you once should not feel like it, that’s okay!

le petit Paris in Vienna: le bol

The Cafe Le Bol on Neuer Markt 14, in the 1st district of Vienna, could also be in a side street of Paris: small, lively and tres tres nice. The staff with the typical parisian arrogance and the perfect french accent emphazise the authenticity. There is also the typical french "brasserie" menue with soups, baguettes, quiches, salads, and - last but not least - excellent sweet tartes. I prefer to have breakfast in the le bol, but it's also perfect for the evening with good and cheap wine. In addition to several small tables there is also a large table that is shared by the guests and sometimes leads to funny anecdotes or even friendships. It is always filled with a young hipster crowd, so you better reserve to be sure to avoid long waiting times.

New Party: LASHLINE

Is it Thursday night and you are already in the weekend party mood - but there’s nothing going on in Vienna? What’s to do? Wait another day for the weekend parties?
I say: NO!
Yesterday, the Club Market launched its brand-new Thursday party series – hosted by the Viennese nightlife legend Tamara Mascara: LASHLINE
A new location and a new concept: every 1st and 3rd Thursday of the month, the LASHLINE doors open at 9 p.m. and you can start a fancy after-work evening with a good cocktail in a loungy atmosphere. Listen to smooth minimal electronic, house, soul, jazz, swing and lots of 80s sound.
After midnight, the Vienna glitterati mingle with a relaxed and mixed crowd and dance towards the weekend – until 5 o’clock in the morning!
Apart from fashion shows, special acts and guest DJs (yesterday it was the gorgeous Edgar Retro) and other performances, the hightlight of a LASHLINE evening is surely the exciting Tamara Mascara and her hot and steamy BURLESQUE SHOW.
All in all, LASHLINE offers you a wonderful evening – and thanks to Tamara Mascara’s great DJ set, you can beginn your weekend on Thursday in a truly thrilling way.

Cafe Prückel

The cafe Prückel, located Stubenring 24 in the 1st district, was founded in 1903 and last renovated in the 50s. It is offering everything you wanna find in a cafe:
A large smoking area, retro charme, international newspapers, good coffee (always with a free glass of water and a silver tray), good homemade food and a not very charming but very polite waiter. The audience is a mix of elderly people, tourists and young, hip, art students.
There are also several art exhibitions and even a stage in the basement. And of course there is also the tinkling piano music in the background (Monday, Wednesday and Friday 19-22). So it is easy to understand why the cafe Prückel is one of my favorite cafes in Vienna.

Interview with Mel Merio

Your new album Lovemore is out now. What should we expect?

Good electro-pop! All songs were produced by my longtime friends Christopher Just and Larry Tee. People who know me very well, so it is also a piece of me you'll get!

Lovemore, an allusion to the harder times we live in?

Of course, it's all about love! Only love can strengthen each of your own qualities. I do not understand why you should always respond to hate with hate and war with war. I myself have a very positive attitude, and believe that if you respond with love to the negatives, the world can change for the better. I don't wanna close my eyes, but give as much love as possible. But the most important thing is: learn to love yourself!

You have lived 3 years in New York City, how did it come to it?

My good friend and producer Larry Tee invited Christopher Just and me to make an album with him there. Of course we immediately said yes. At first it was a lot of fun and adventure but it was soon reality and hard work. It was an incredibly great and important experience though and I have never regretted the move from Vienna to New York City.

Not many have the opportunity to live in NYC. So directly comparing, what are the pros and cons of living in New York and Vienna?

The advantage of a life in Vienna is of course the quality of life. I mean the quality of air, water, the cleanliness of the streets and that you can get everywhere relatively fast. A disadvantage is of course the widespread bad mood of the inhabitants. But under the surface there is often a surprise! The advantage of NYC is the openness and friendliness of the residents. There is also a great mix of the cultures. NYC has a positive attitude to life and you get the feeling that "everything is possible". A disadvantage is all the dirt in the city and the widespread superficiality in people.

Has New York changed you?

Absolutely! Surprisingly, I've become much calmer. Of course it was a stressful time in my career, with the album that we have produced and the many appearances in Clubs. So I've spent more free time to relax and to listen more to me and whats really important in life. But NYC has given me an incredible amount of energy!

Not only since your appearances at the Vienna Life Ball for the Austrian AIDS relief, you have many loyal, gay fans. What do you think the gay community appreciates so much about you?

I can not answer what the gay community likes so much about me. But I have always had a great affinity for gays. My first poster was from the pet shop boys, the first boy I fell in love was gay, even today, most of my friends are gay. I simply love and appreciate them. Perhaps they appreciate the many male energy I have in my performances on stage. Or perhaps my outfits, I hear often compliments about my style from them. In any case I'm glad for the unconditional love they give me and I am grateful for each and everyone!

You are also famous for your, sometimes, unusual and extravagant style. What criteria do you have, when you are looking for clothes? Do you have a favourite designer or some style idols? What's the philosophy behind your style?

In clothing it's all about authenticity for me! The style must fit you, that's why I have no style idols at all. And there is also no favourite designer, allthough there are so many great ones. But I always prefered vintage fashion. My mother also has a vintage shop. So it is almost like a ritual that I go for a visit to her with an empty suitcase and come with a full one back home. I try to spend not very much money for clothes. I prefer to invest it in travel and dinner with friends, etc. So my philosophy about fashion is: Always be true to yourself and don't try being someone else, then you do everything right!

When you are in Vienna, where do you love to spend your evenings most?

It may surprise many, but I'm really not that party-person anymore. I am so often in clubs when I have gigs, so I love to relax! Preferably with yoga or medidation and I love it so much to walk through Vienna with my best friend's dogs. But what I do like to do on evenings is having dinner with good friends. But never more than 6 people, so you can really pay attention to everyone! My absulute favorite restaurant in this regard is the Restraurant Bankok in the Neustiftgasse.

What music do you love to hear, apart from your own?

Music is very important to me and of course I appreciate not only mine and what friends produce. It depends very much on the mood, but my all times favourites are definitely the Pet Shop Boys, Depeche Mode, and Management.

After your new album Lovemore, what are the next plans in your career?

I just moved to London. Together with Christopher Just I have founded the record label Lovemore Records there. And I'm already working on my new album. It will be a mantra album. For this, we take 5000 years old Hindu prayer songs and mix them with 80s/90s synthy pop. I think it will be very exciting.

Your message to the world?

love more!

Bellaria Kino

Always a little bit in the past - that's the thing about Vienna!
But also in the cinema? Yes, there is a unique address: the Bellaria Cinema in the Museumsstrasse 3, in the 7th district, just behind the Volksthetaer.
Here are the stars of the Ufa-time still a live.
All film hits from the 20s to 60s are played here almost every day.It is worth to be there, like an hour, before the performance! It is almost never sold out, but I love to sit there with a glass of wine, you can buy from the funny lady at the "bar", and listen to the old Viennese ladies and the exchange information about everyday life and old movies.
It seems like the Bellaria-foyer is a kind of livingroom compensation, which they visit regularly and from  now on, the same for me :)

Being a Dickhead's Cool

For several weeks, this video goes through the net now.
We all enjoyed to laugh about the typical hipsters you get to see in this video, but it also makes me a little sad. I know it plays in London, but it reminds me so strongly to Berlin where the charakters are hardly distinguishable...
I am sure in Vienna it will take a little longer before leggings for men, hair bands, retro glasses and 80's flea market trash reach the broad masses. Maybe it's better that it will need some more time, or that this wave never quite reach the "sleeping" Vienna.
BUT: life is so much funnier with dickheads, and sometimes I also love to be one, at least part time ;-)

So have a look, enjoy and make yourself a picture.

Ja, Panik

It is time to present another favorite band from me.
The indie-band Ja, Panik from the Austrian Burgenland.
In 2006 they succeeded with the so named album "Ja, Panik" the breakthrough. The single "zwischen 2 und 4" made it to number 13 of the editorial charts of the German magazine Spex, and number 17 in the austrian indie charts.
A further radio hit was the single "Like A Hurricane".
In 2007, the second album released under the name "The Taste And The Money" and last year came the album "The Angst And The Money", with great successfull songs like : Alles hin, hin, hin, die luft ist dünn and pardon.
Now they live in Berlin and tours throughout Europe but are often back home in Vienna.
The sound of Ja, Panik seems for me like the ideal soundtrack for a life in Vienna.

Shakespeare & Company, Vienna

One of my favourite bookstores is Shakespeare & Company in Paris. Now they opend a so named bookstore in the Sterngasse 2, 1st district, as a homage
It is almost identical, from a portrait of William Shakespeare to the densely packed stacks of books in every inch of space. Located in one of the oldest section of Vienna, next to the Jewish Synagogue, you will get lost in a world of books and history.
Already on my first visit I fell in love and shopped over my budget, again. But they have such a great selection of English-language books and magazines from around the world. So I warn you, it is addictive!!

Interview with Tamara Mascara and Edgar Retro

How did you get the idea to organize your own party HOMO during the heaven clubbing every saturday at camera club in the Neubaugasse?:

Tamara:
We met a few years ago at a party and became friends. Soon we wanted to make a own clubbing in Vienna and the idea of HOMO was born. First we did the HOMO clubbing only once a month, at club massive, but it was more like a private party for friends.
Edgar:
And then we recived the offer from the camara club, and we said yes...

What's HOMO in heaven clubbing at Camera Club?

Tamara:
It's about the mixture of fun and trash for a large crowd, always with funny topics (some of them controversial). For example; there is the hip hop and rap scene, which is actually not very pro gay ... so we take this topic and make a mockery of it - Edgar as a macho pimp and me as his ghetto chick ... but in the HOMO way ;-)
Edgar:
Trash!! To do what we feel like; having fun, have some drinks, combined with cool costumes and good music! It's just our little club fantasy where we can shake off and share it.

Where do you get your ideas for the topics?

Tamara:
Just everything that is fun for us and is processed without mercy.
Edgar:
Yeah, we always brainstorm in good company
and think of our childhood dreams.

Which music do you choose for your clubbing?

Tamara:
It's mostly personal taste and of course always some candies for the guests.
Edgar:
Taff techno, hard electro and lots and lots of trash! I just listen to what people want, so they get it very quickly.

HOMO in heaven is the place to be on saturdays, but where do you like to party on your own?

Tamara:
I like the rhinoplasty at club U very much, we also have worked with them.
Edgar:
Exactly, rhino is super! j'adore!
I also like to go to the club prater sauna, the planetarium and sometimes also meat market at badeschiff.
And on mondays I am of course at my own party at club flex.

What's missing in the Viennese Night Life?

Tamara:
Tokyo decadence parties!! And sometimes a little bit more courage from the party guests in terms of costumes at least, because some themes are very simple, but just a few dare.
Edgar:
More crazy people like us!

Why Vienna?

Tamara:
Small is beautiful?
Edgar:
Because I was born here and to migrate is soooo very exhausting!

Gay in vienna: fun or stressful?

Tamara:
I have learned that it depends very much on which district of Vienna you move trough. In the inner districts, like the very popular 5th, 6th and 7th, it is usually totally ok to be gay. But in the "working class" districts on the outskirts, like Simmering (11th) walking around in shopping malls or waiting for the tube it is still very difficult .
Edgar:
Exactly, it really depends on the location but generally it is pleasant to live in Vienna. I mean sure, the people in Berlin or London are more tolerant but I'm glad we are not pelted with stones at rainbow parades like somewhere else.

How would you describe your personal style?

Tamara:
My personal style is actually very classic, because I love the 50s and the former beauty ideal most. If I need to be dressed for a particular topic, I find most of my inspirations in fashion books. Generally, I find inspiration almost anywhere: in movies, in music, in art, in the colors of nature, in other people...anything can inspire!
Edgar:
Made in the 80's!! I just love the 80's style, there is nothing like it. But I also enjoy taking styles from film stars or musicians I like. The rest of my inspiration I get by the current trends on the catwalk.

Are there any other plans besides youre HOMO clubbing?

Tamara:
Yes! Every first and third thursday in a month I have my own clubbing at Market Club called 'Lashline'. And every wednesday evening I am on the turntables of the café Flex.
Edgar:

My party 'so messed up' every monday at the Flex and various other club gigs in Vienna and abroad.

You're top play list at the moment?

Tamara:
Hmm.. hard to say. It depends on the atmosphere, sorry.
Edgar:
  • Dirty Doering - I would
  • Frauenarzt - Arsch und Titten
  • Slade - cum on feel the noize
  • The Hollies - crimson and clover
  • super flu - yours opa

Your message to the world?

Tamara: live and let live.
Edgar: Go HOMO!
