Until 4th of November WestLicht Gallery "Schauplatz für Fotografie" at Westbahnstrasse 40 in the 7th district, will be showing the exhibition World Press Photo 10.
The show consists of around 200 of the best press photographs of 2009. The exhibited photographs have been awarded prizes in the world's most prestigious photo-journalist competition. The international jury of the 53rd annual World Press Photo Contest has selected a photo by the Italian photographer Pietro Masturzo as the World Press Photo of the Year 2009. The picture depicts women shouting in protest from a rooftop in Tehran, on 24 June. The winning photograph is part of a story depicting the nights following the contested presidential elections in Iran, when people shouted their dissent from roofs and balconies, after daytime protests in the streets. The story as a whole was awarded first prize in the category People in the News.
The show, which is conceived of as a travelling exhibition, will visit over 100 locations throughout the world and is seen by around two million visitors. It is not only an impressive demonstration of achievements in international photo-journalism but also a unique retrospective of events of worldwide importance and historical significance that have taken place during the previous year.
